First of all hair does not grows back faster, thicker and darker
This is a common misconception! A fact and myth of shaving past, that repeated shaving stimulates the hair follicle and thus increasing the growth speed and hair thickness. This was scientifically disproven in 1920’s - 1970’s. Journal of Investigative Dermatology (1970) Conclusion: Hair growth was influenced by temperature and individual people’s nutrition. Shaving had no effect on hair growth.
The bottom line you’re not going to turn into a Wookie after shaving – Ever!
Get to know your bathroom: Shower before and after shaving
Shaving in the shower offers many benefits. It’s easy to clean up and you start where you need to end up. (Shower Beers are optional). Showering 1st enables your skin and the skin pours to relax and absorb moisture, ultimately preparing the surface for shaving.
Remember shave against the natural grain? Shaving against the grain or direction enables you to catch the hair and add tension lift from the surface of the skin. Nothing will piss-off and aggravate your surface skin more than reverse engineering your natural growth pattern. To avoid the dreaded ingrown hair and irritation while shaving. Tension on the skin surface is critical, proceed to hold the primary area steady (tort) while the shaving hand pulls back with the razor or electric clippers.
Pressure on the skin: Downward pressure should not be required as you are shaving across the skin rather than into the skin. Downward pressure increases friction and razor burn. Modern shaving blades are designed and engineered for a close quick shave. See Evo-5 & Rev-3 razors by ManBrand & yes they’re Awesome!
To lube or not to lube? We recommend that after having a shower the surface area needs to be prepared. Baby oil or moisturise the selected area in order to provide a protective barrier between the blade surface and the skin. Lube before offers the skin protection, lube after offers nourishment and moisture to repair the surface layers effected by irritation and exfoliation. Manbrand put together an awesome brew guide for making DIY essential oils, you can make these from everyday and natural products Man!
Can I reuse my facial shaving razors for the backyard job? Ahhhhhhhh, Noooooo! This is not recommended as hygienic removal of hair is compromised when there is a crossover in the areas we shave. i.e. in smaller crevices of the body there are different temperatures and potential bacteria that can build up. Bacteria love moisture and warmth. Ewe, right! So we need a game plan here Man.
GAME PLAN: Start with the “end” in mind: Start shaving the course body hair 1st.
Trim sensitive area first: Use the electric razor or clippers to remove course hair from arms, legs, back, neck and armpits and work your way down your body, you can go over the same area without risk of nicks. A (number 2-3) setting should be adequate to provide clearance from skin folds and areas such as the back of the knees and elbows.
Clean the fluff and short curly pubic hair out from the face of the clippers. Every 5-10 strokes.
The top down shaving workflow: 1st with the electric razor and then with the manual razor.
- Arms, legs, neck, feet, hands
- Chest, lower back, back
- Armpits, nads “testicles”, bumfluff or arse crack
This will ensure you are moving from the naturally clean and dry parts of your body and ending up with the armpits, genitals and anus, bum that we know we don’t want transferred to our face.
The final chapter: Once the 1st process is complete you should be familiar with the curves of your body and stroke distance required to lift and cut course and soft hair. Enhancing the rest of your manhood should be easy Man, remember shaving your genitals requires being careful but following some basics and guidelines.
- Pull the skin tight and firm but don’t choke the turkey neck. Just provide support that your jewels deserve and ensure smaller soft strokes across the curve of the area.
- Level the razor head in line with a clear path to shave. Longer strokes on the main shaft and smaller strokes on the testicles.
- Rinse the blade regularly, ensure blade is free from debris and built up hair
- Don’t risk the knob, remember if there is no hair it doesn’t need to be shaved
Skincare Post shave: Antiseptic and moisturizer are critical to ensure that there are no possible infections or cuts that are exposed to infection. We recommend a light application of topical cream or antiseptic 1-2 days post shaving. We hope this has provided some tips and information on a rather taboo subject for men.
